Welcome to Patchwork Goldens! We are breeders passionate about Golden Retrievers, and the joy they bring to our lives. We are located in a SW suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The name Patchwork comes from my love of quilting. Enjoying a beautiful quilt and holding a sweet puppy both are experiences to savor and cherish. However, just as the creation of a beautiful quilt takes patience, time, and commitment, raising a puppy is no simple task. In quilting, it is important to consider the quality of the fabric, to find the right pattern, to hone your technique, and to pay attention to detail. Similarly, the decision to breed a litter of puppies requires attention to the pedigree, temperament, and health clearances. In both cases, the more thoughtful you are in the process, the happier you will be with the end result.
My personal history of showing Goldens stretches back to 1996. At that time, my breeder advised me to attend obedience classes, and, instantly, I became hooked on the sport. Exposure to agility and conformation training intensified my desire to make breeding and showing dogs a central part of my life. I now own and raise four Goldens of my own, all of whom live indoors and contribute endless love and energy to my household.
Over the years, I have had the good fortune of sharing my love of Goldens with the members of my family. They say that it takes a village to raise a litter of pups, and Patchwork is lucky to have just such a team in place. In addition to numerous friends and neighbors, the Patchwork Goldens are under the constant care of myself, my sister, Loree, and her daughters, Ashley and Kandice. While both girls love dogs, Kandice, in particular, shared my interest in Goldens from a young age. She attended classes, shows, and anything else she could find. In time, Kandice began showing in Junior Showmanship, and had success competing both regionally and on a national level at shows like Westminster KC in NY, and the Eukanuba Invitational shows. We have had such fun sharing these experiences, and have met a lot of wonderful people along the journey. Although college takes up much of Kandice’s time these days, she still handles dogs for other owners as time allows.
An integral member of our team who also deserves mention was my friend and fellow quilter, Kathy Friedrich. She was the “puppy nanny extraordinaire.” Not only diid Kathy spend days at my home, but she also made sure that each puppy bearing the Patchwork name went home with their own quilt. Given that I work full-time as an R.N. I would not have been able to raise a litter without her help. My gratitude was overwhelming! Kathy had been diagnosed with breast cancer over 10 years ago. She fought the battle with all she had until God called her home in Feb '08. We all miss her so much. In addition, my thanks go out to Susan Miller for all of her support and help . None of this would be possible without my friends and mentors, Bonnie and Jim Wakely (Dakota Goldens), breeders of litters that produced my first three Goldens – dogs that changed my life! Thank you.....
I am a member of the Golden Retriever Club of America and an active member and former board member of the Greater Twin Cities Golden Retriever Club. We don’t breed very often and when we do it is according to the GRCA’s Code of Ethics by following their breeding guidelines: OFA hips & elbows, OFA heart and an annual CERF clearance on both parents. We believe in breeding for health and temperament first, proper structure, and, of course, for that pleasing look. Our puppies are sold with a contract with an AKC limited registration, to be spayed or neutered. I keep in contact with my puppy owners and enjoy hearing how they are doing. We do not sell overseas.
